Call the Brinks truck, because it just backed all the way into Oklahoma City.
Earlier today, Thunder forward Jalen Williams put pen to paper on a five-year max rookie extension that could balloon to a jaw-dropping $287 million.
Fresh off their first-ever NBA title, OKC just secured the holy trinity of their young core: Williams, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Chet Holmgren. All three are now locked in through 2031, meaning Thunder fans can start shopping for long-term championship merch.
Add up their deals, and you’re staring at a colossal $822 million in combined contracts.
In today’s NBA economy, where teams are tiptoeing around the dreaded second apron like it’s lava, OKC is doing the financial equivalent of balancing on a high wire while juggling flaming basketballs, and somehow not getting burned.
So, what does this mean moving forward? For starters, it means OKC is officially in “Let’s run this back” mode. With the core trio secured, the Thunder’s championship window is wide open for at least the next 2–5 years.
Even better, these mega deals don’t even kick in until 2027. So next season’s roster? Still intact. Still dangerous. Still well under the first apron. But come 2027, that’s when things start to get interesting. That’s when GM Sam Presti will need to make some important calls on guys like Isaiah Hartenstein and Lu Dort, two vital pieces in the title run.
Luckily, the Thunder are sitting on more draft picks than a fantasy league on opening night. If contracts get tight, they can pivot: trade for flexibility, draft the next hidden gem, or even let some young bucks step in on budget-friendly deals.
Bottom line? OKC is doing what everyone thought was impossible: spending big and staying flexible. In an era where parity is becoming the new normal in the NBA, the Thunder are building what could become a dynasty, and they’re doing it their way: smart, patient, and loaded with talent.
